Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy: Discover Healing Through Self-Compassion
Integration with IFS: A Client-Centered Approach
Internal Family Systems therapy is based on the belief that inside every person, there are a multitude of parts with their own feelings, thoughts, and roles. It also works from the assumption that we all have an Essence or True Self energy that gives us access to compassion, curiosity, clarity, creativity, calmness, confidence, courage, and connectedness. By getting to know the different parts of yourself and building the relationship between them and your Self, IFS naturally works toward integration.
At some point when working with clients and using IFS, I usually hear the statement ".. that was weird..” - and I laugh and say “YES! But it works!”
IFS is an experiential therapy - it uses mindfulness to “go inside” and get to know the parts of yourself that have been operating on autopilot for a long time. We all use the language already when we say things like “there’s a part of me that feels like I should go to the gym, but there’s another part of me that really just wants to order pizza and go home and watch the real housewives!” IFS takes this language seriously and asks - what if we could get to know both parts, and hear from them about why they have such strong opinions about how to use your time? When we talk about pizza, it sounds a little silly, but what about the part of you that SNAPS when your kid asks to watch TV for the 100th time in a 30 minute period while you’re trying to make dinner and also return those emails? Sometimes when we slow down and get to know these parts, we learn they’re protecting something really vulnerable that is stuck in time. Once we can get access to that vulnerability and bring some healing, our lives can literally transform.
I love all the therapies I use, but IFS is the one that has deeply impacted me personally. It’s changed my relationship with myself in the most gentle and compassionate way. It’s helped me become more curious with those around me, and soften to others when they can’t bring their best selves to the table. It also allows me to sit as a therapist and hold space for really big and scary experiences without getting overwhelmed or carrying the trauma with me into the rest of my day.
I’d love to meet with you and answer any questions you have, and hear how we could work together. If you’re ready to take the next step - book a consultation and let’s get to know each other a bit! Still feeling curious? You can read more about IFS Therapy by clicking here.
