Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Embrace Change and Live Aligned with Your Values
Cultivating Mindful Engagement with the Present
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness-based approach to therapy. It helps you learn to bring awareness to the present moment and strengthens your ability to stop over identifying with your thoughts. ACT also puts a lot of attention on identifying your values in the hope that doing so will bring clarity to what is important in life. All of these components work together to help you take action toward a life worth living.
ACT skills support you while doing trauma work by helping you to accept your experiences and commit to values-driven actions in your life moving forward. This isn’t a therapy I use explicitly in my work with people, but I often weave in mindfulness, values identification, and thought diffusion as supports to the work we are doing in EMDR or IFS.
